Terms & Conditions
Last updated: 2025-01-26
These terms govern your use of BoomType (the "Service"). By using the Service, you agree to them. If you don't agree to any part, please don't use the Service. We've kept this readable; it isn't fine print designed to hide anything.
1. Using BoomType
BoomType is a free typing tutor. You may use it for personal learning, practice, and benchmarking your own typing speed. You may use it in educational or workplace settings. You may not:
- Use the Service to abuse, harass, or impersonate other people.
- Attempt to disrupt, reverse-engineer, or overload the Service or its APIs.
- Bypass rate limits, anti-cheat checks, or feature gates (including premium features when they launch).
- Submit content (nicknames, contact messages) that is illegal, infringing, defamatory, or otherwise harmful.
2. Leaderboards and fair play
When leaderboards launch, your test results may appear publicly next to the nickname you've set. To keep leaderboards useful for everyone:
- No cheating. Don't submit fabricated WPM scores, replay keystroke recordings, or submit results you didn't actually type yourself.
- No bots or automation. Scripts, macros, hardware auto-typers, and headless-browser automation are not allowed for submitting results.
- No multi-account farming. One human, one leaderboard entry. Creating multiple accounts or guest IDs to manipulate rankings is not allowed.
We use automated plausibility checks (e.g. rejecting WPM values outside the range achievable by a human typist, and inconsistent accuracy/error ratios) and we may manually review suspicious results. We reserve the right to remove individual results, hide nicknames, or exclude an identity from leaderboards entirely if we believe the results were obtained unfairly.
3. Nicknames and user content
You can set a public nickname. Nicknames are visible on leaderboards and on any results you share. You're responsible for the nickname you choose.
Nicknames must not be: abusive, hateful, sexually explicit, deceptive (e.g. impersonating another person or brand), or otherwise inappropriate. We may rename, hide, or reset nicknames that violate this policy, with or without notice. Repeated violations may result in exclusion from leaderboards.
Messages submitted via the contact form are also user content. The same standards apply — abusive or threatening messages will be ignored and may be reported to authorities where required by law.
4. Certificates
BoomType may issue a certificate ID when you complete a test or reach a typing milestone. Certificates are intended for light verification only — for example, sharing a typing-speed result with a friend or in a non-binding job-application context.
A BoomType certificate is not an accredited certification. It is not issued by an accredited testing body, it is not recognized by any employer or educational institution as a formal qualification, and it does not guarantee that the typist named on the certificate is the person who took the test. Anyone relying on a BoomType certificate for hiring or similar decisions should independently verify the typist's ability.
5. No warranty
BoomType is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind — express or implied. We don't warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or that the WPM and accuracy numbers are perfectly accurate. Typing metrics depend on your hardware, browser, and input method, and may vary between sessions. Use the metrics as a directional guide, not as a contractually binding measurement.
6. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, BoomType and its operators are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of (or inability to use) the Service. Our total liability for any claim arising out of the Service is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us to use the Service in the 12 months before the claim, or (b) USD $20. Most users pay nothing, so (b) typically applies.
7. Accounts and guest IDs
Today BoomType runs in guest mode: you get a guest ID generated in your browser's local storage. You're responsible for keeping access to the device that holds your guest ID — if you clear local storage or switch devices, your guest identity (and any locally stored progress) won't carry over. When accounts launch, you'll be able to upgrade a guest ID to a real account without losing progress.
You're responsible for any activity associated with your guest ID or account. Don't share access to your guest ID or account in a way that would let another person submit results on your behalf.
8. Premium features (when launched)
When we launch a premium tier, the free tier will continue to offer the core lessons, keyboard guide, and timed tests. Premium features (such as ad removal, advanced analytics, or unlimited daily tests) will be governed by additional terms presented at purchase time. Subscription fees are generally non-refundable except where required by law or where we explicitly state otherwise at purchase.
Free-tier users may be subject to daily test limits and may see ads. We may change the specifics of the free-tier limits over time; we'll announce material changes on the blog.
9. Changes to the Service and these terms
We may update or change features of the Service at any time. We may also update these terms — material changes will be reflected by updating the "last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the Service after a change indicates acceptance of the updated terms. If a change is materially adverse, we'll call it out on the blog or in an in-app notice.
10. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which BoomType's operator is established, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any disputes will be resolved in the courts of that jurisdiction, except where local consumer-protection law gives you a right to use the courts of your own jurisdiction.
